A piece of thin, self-adhesive substrate applied directly to the product or its primary packaging that reflects your brand and makes your product standout on the market shelves. Paper substrates Field(s) of use/application
- Uncoated paper: Used for labels that don’t require high printing quality; e.g., declaration, marking and logistic labels.
- Coated paper: Used for high-quality labels with demanding finishing; e.g., image labels.
- Thermal paper: Used for variable data direct thermal overprinting; e.g., weighing and logistics labels.
- Metalized paper: Used for special visual effects or as a substitute for hot foil printing; e.g., premium look labels.
- Structured paper: Displaying special structure or color shade; e.g., wine, craft beer, ECO products labels.
Synthetic substrates include:
- Polypropylene or PP: Used for adhesion on flat surfaces; PP labels are resistant to water and mild chemicals.
- Polyethylene or PE: Used for adhesion on curved surfaces; PE labels are resistant to water and mild chemicals.
- Polyester or PET: Used for adhesion on flat surfaces and durable applications; PET labels are resistant to environmental conditions, as well as thermally and dimensional very stable.
- Metallized PP, PE or PET: Used when metallic effects are required, e.g., premium look labels; resistant to environmental conditions.
- Static foils: Used when statics (instead of an adhesive) is used for sticking the label to the surface.
Special Substrates
- Security substrates: Used for protection against falsification and unauthorized removal; e.g., warranty labels trademark.
- Shrinksleeve substrates: Used for production of heat-shrinkable sleeves, for wrapping around the entire surface of a cylindre (object bottle can, etc.).
- Composite substrates: Used for production of heat-sealed packaging; e.g., bags for cosmetic and pharmaceutical concoctions sachets, etc.
- Biodegradable substrates: Used for the production of labels and flexible packaging, which require biodegradable and compostable.
- ln-mold substrates: Used for plastic injection molding, where a label is fused with plastics due to high temperature.

Types of Adhesives
The adhesive, which is transferred onto the substrate, is chosen according to the surface of the label application, as well as according to environmental conditions, in which labeling, storage, and consumption of the product take place. Choosing the wrong type of adhesive might cause the labels to roll up or even separate from the surface; on the other hand, it may not be possible to remove them from the surface when needed.
Adhesives fall into the following categories:
- Permanent: Used for standard adhesion to most surfaces; most commonly used.
- Extra permanent: Used where strong adhesion is required and/or in cases of rough surfaces; labels are difficult to remove.
- Easily removable: Used where easy removal of labels is required, that doesn’t leave traces of the adhesive on the labeling Surface.
- For adhesion at low temperatures: Used for products stored at low temperatures; e.g., frozen food labels.
- Special adhesives: Used for special labeling circumstances and surfaces, e.g., car tire labels, ribbed packaging, etc
